Thoughtful DIY Sympathy Gift Basket Ideas

When a friend experiences a loss, expressing sympathy can feel difficult; offer care with this DIY gift basket for a family grieving a mother or father.

Following my dear Mom's service, I admired the lovely floral displays, with one arrangement particularly memorable.

The sympathy gift basket featured houseplants, containing precisely 5 plants—one for each of the 'kids'—intended for each to keep her memory alive.

This thoughtful concept deeply moved me, inspiring this recent DIY sympathy gift basket for a family whose father or husband passed unexpectedly.

Creating a DIY Sympathy Gift Basket with Succulents

3 medium succulant plants and 3 small catcus plants, plus a rectangle basket and ribbon are the supplies you'll need for a DIY sympathy gift basket.
I acquired nearly all the necessary items for this DIY sympathy gift basket at the local Canadian Tire Store.

Materials needed for a sympathy gift basket featuring succulents:

For your ease of shopping, I have provided Amazon affiliate links where possible.

  • Basket (I only located them in a set of 6 online, providing spares for future needs!)
  • 3-5 inch containers holding various succulents
  • 3 small 1 inch pots with colorful cactus
  • 2 inch wide Burlap and Lace Ribbon (mine was sourced from a Dollar Store.)
  • Grosgrain Ribbon (a polka dot design would be quite charming!)
The largest succulent plant with biggest leaves should be placed in the back center of the gray basket.
Place the biggest plant toward the rear center of the basket.

1. Set the largest plant near the back center of the basket.

I selected the most leafy and largest succulent to serve as the arrangement's focal point; I believe it is a “hens and chicks” plant.

A striped leaf plant, lime colored leaf plant, and a hens and chicks plant are positioned in the gray basket to look like a triangle.
Arrange the largest plant pots to form a triangle within the basket.

2. Gently position the remaining 2 succulents in the front corners of the basket.

One succulent displayed variegated stripes while the other was dark green, adding visual appeal; I arranged them carefully to prevent leaf damage.

3 small colorful cactus plants are placed in the gaps left between the large plant pots in a DIY succulent gift basket.
By slightly elevating the larger pots, the diminutive plant pots can be tucked into the spaces between them, filling voids.

3. Use the small cactus plants to fill in the open spaces.

Nestling the smaller pots among the larger ones was slightly challenging, but lifting the larger pots aided in their smooth placement.

4.(optional) Cover the top and fill gaps with moss or dried moss.

Since I lacked moss when assembling this sympathy gift basket, I suggest it as a lovely final touch.

Burlap ribbon is layered with gray grosgrain ribbon around the perimeter of the basket.
Wrapping the basket with layered ribbon adds a polished final detail.

5. Fasten the ribbon around the basket.

Initially, I affixed burlap ribbon to the back of the basket using scotch tape, then securing it neatly at the front with gray grosgrain ribbon.

Tie a gift tag ribbon onto the grosgrain ribbon with jute string.
Affix a gift tag to the front using jute or ribbon.

6. Download a complimentary sympathy gift tag and secure it with jute ribbon.

Additional suggestions for thoughtful sympathy gifts:

  • Offer a card accompanied by a gift certificate for a spa session.
  • Assemble a gift basket featuring at-home spa essentials such as bath salts, lotion, and nail polish.
  • Create a memory jar suitable for the funeral to gather recollections and thoughts about the departed from friends and family.
  • Provide meals for the family in a disposable pan. (This lasagna and these brownies are excellent choices).
  • Simply dedicating time to call or visit to support someone in mourning is a profound gesture; a comforting hug can mean so much…
