Transform a plain black wood bowl into a striking Modern DIY kitchen pendant light fixture with simple tools.

I have been working to enhance my small kitchen; we improved the area with a fresh paint shade and new under and over cabinet lighting.

Next, I focused on the window above the kitchen sink, which felt dull. I imagined a lovely black kitchen pendant light over the sink, but local shops lacked the right item.

Therefore, with assistance from my capable husband, we fashioned a unique kitchen pendant light from a black wooden bowl!

The process for creating this suspended light is quite straightforward once you gather the necessary items. We searched extensively but finally located everything in our local stores. Here is what you require (I have linked comparable items to Amazon):

  • 12″ wooden bowl (I already possessed this; check garage sales or thrift shops. Target also carries similar bowls like this one and this one.)
  • Drill
  • Hanging pendant light kit with wrapped cord (This kit already includes the canopy kit!)
  • Black Canopy kit
  • Strain Relief Connector
  • Vintage Edison Style Light Bulb
  • Electrical wire stripping tool
  • Electrical voltage tester pen

Assembling a DIY Pendant Light

Drill hole in the bottom of the wooden bowl

Step 1: Drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the wooden bowl big enough to accommodate the size of the cord.

Finding the bowl's exact center can be challenging; we utilized a protractor to pinpoint the center.

If you are uncertain about the correct drill bit size, begin small and increase size if necessary.

Step 2: Cut the hanging pendant light cord about 4-6 inches longer than you want the light to hang down.

Remember, it is always better to start too long rather than too short!

Step 3: Thread the corded wire through the bowl so the socket is facing down inside the bowl.

Step 4: Insert the corded wire through the hole in the bottom of the ceiling canopy.

Step 5: Following the directions on the back of the canopy kit box, place all the hardware in the correct locations.

Step 6: Attach the strain relief connector above the canopy kit bar.

This is a vital fitting for the hanging light set, supporting the fixture's weight. Finding it locally was difficult. Although it was slightly larger than desired, it functioned adequately for our project; we ensured it was screwed on extremely tightly for secure holding.

With the light fully put together, the next step is to hardwire it into your fixture.

My attempts to photograph these steps were unsuccessful! Consequently, I am sharing a helpful YouTube video with a very detailed, step-by-step guide on hardwiring a pendant light:

  1. Identify the circuit breakers and switch off the circuit supplying the light fixture you are working on.
  2. Remove the current light fixture from its position.
  3. Detach the wiring from the ceiling.
  4. Restore power at the breaker and, with an electrical tester, identify the live wire from the neutral one. (Normally the black cable carries current, while the white one does not. However, verifying is always the safest approach!)
  5. Switch the breaker off immediately!
  6. Fasten the mounting bracket securely in place.
  7. With electrical wire strippers, remove the insulation from the pendant light cord ends to expose the internal conductors.
  8. Connect the live wire from the fixture to the live wire in the ceiling. Join the neutral wire from the fixture to the neutral wire in the ceiling. (In most cases, the black cable is live and the white cable is neutral.) Secure each connection with a wire cap.
  9. Fix the ceiling canopy onto the bracket.
  10. Insert a light bulb into the socket.
  11. Restore power at the breaker and activate your newly installed light fixture.

What is the ideal height for hanging a kitchen sink pendant light?

I was uncertain about this myself, so my research indicated that they typically hang 12-20 inches below an 8-foot ceiling, or sit with 30-36 inches of space above the countertop.

This advice provided a broad selection of possibilities, so I simply chose the spot that appealed to me visually. Our fixture hangs 37 inches above the countertop and drops down 23 inches from our 8-foot ceiling height.

The kitchen sink pendant light is now installed!
