Are you searching for straightforward Christmas decorating suggestions?
I received an email reaction regarding the article I published on our bedroom decorations for the holidays. The message has stuck with me. It contained the following words:
“I adore this, Rita. I am currently having trouble feeling the Christmas spirit. We are enduring a particularly long and challenging phase of life, and the reality is – it is now the festive season, yet I simply lack the energy or enthusiasm for it. Thank you for these uncomplicated ideas.”
I prefer to keep Christmas decorating easy and uncomplicated throughout the year, which is why I am sharing my top strategies to make the entire process much simpler.
1. Establish a cap on the Christmas decorations you are prepared to store.
I realize that simplifying your holiday decorations is easier in theory than in practice! There are countless beautiful and eye-catching options available, making it difficult to decide between them all. Given that you may have been adding a few new items each year, it is quite possible that after many decades of annual decorating, you will end up with an enormous collection to sort through.
One of my most important pieces of advice is to determine a specific amount of Christmas decor you are willing to store and pack away annually. The reality is, the larger your collection, the more work decorating becomes each year.
My personal boundary (spanning 33 years) has consistently been just two storage totes. I am not entirely sure why I set this restriction as a newlywed, but I did – and I have never once regretted my decision!
Here are several methods to maintain your Christmas stash at the size you desire:
- When removing Christmas decorations from last year's storage, inspect for items that have not been used in several years. These pieces might be better off donated so someone else can enjoy them.
- Before buying any new Christmas decorations – even if they are currently on an excellent sale – ask yourself if you have adequate space in your storage area. If the answer is no, what existing items are you willing to part with to accommodate the new addition?
- Clearly mark and label your boxes so that you can locate everything quickly next year. (Here are some excellent suggestions for organizing holiday decorations.)

2. Treat Christmas decorating as an opportunity to declutter and refresh your space!
I view Christmas decorating as the ideal moment to declutter and clean areas, creating a blank slate for a fresh new look. Please, do not let this statement intimidate you! It does not have to consume a tremendous amount of time.
If you think strategically and perform a bit of swift cleaning, you will be finished much sooner than you anticipate.

3. Begin with a base of neutral winter decorations and incorporate festive elements.
Since we have moved into a more compact living area, I have completely changed how I approach holiday decorating. While I do adore Christmas decorations, I first establish a "foundation" of cozy winter-themed decor.
Winter decor, unlike decorations specifically designed for Christmas – is neutral enough to remain displayed throughout the entire winter season. I have become extremely selective about what enters my home, and I now seek items that will coordinate beautifully with a few specific festive pieces.
Here are some winter decorations that pair well with festive accents:
- Soft and plush blankets in neutral tones
- Pillow covers in soft textures (such as flannel and sherpa)
- Winter-themed art prints
- Candles and lanterns
- Display items such as wooden, velvet, and brush trees
- Shelves filled with books offer year-round appeal
- Include decorative brass bells
A foundation of Winter decor allows for easy addition of Christmas elements for a complete holiday look

Step four involves selecting specific focal points for Christmas decoration
Rather than attempting to cover every surface, concentrate on a few impactful zones; a stunning Christmas tree, for instance, can become the centerpiece. Establish a theme or color palette matching your personal taste, then choose ornaments and garlands thoughtfully for unity. Keeping other areas uncluttered will enhance the tree's brilliance.
Unadorned spaces serve two important decorating purposes
- They prevent the area from appearing overly crowded
- They allow ample room for guests to gather
For example, instead of densely arranging beautiful pieces on end tables near the sofa, I prefer leaving space so guests have room for their coffee and appetizer.

Step five is decorating with items holding personal significance
When dressing your living and dining areas for Christmas, recall that the most meaningful decorations are those with sentimental value to you. Skip the pressure to achieve a flawless 'viral Christmas tree' look; instead, incorporate meaningful touches that embody the holiday spirit and bring joy to your family.
Consider these ideas for meaningful additions to your decor
- Heirlooms from your family passed down across many generations
- Ornaments crafted by the children over the years
- Objects reflecting your interests, such as a book collection, musical instruments, or past favorite holiday films
- A photo album displaying family memories on the coffee table

Step six suggests creating some of your own decor if you enjoy crafting
If crafting is a part of your decorating enjoyment, it is often a cost-saving method for Christmas items
This year, my sole Christmas craft was sewing new pillow covers (usable all winter!). The item pictured drew inspiration from a Pottery Barn pillow cover priced at $65, but I created a similar one for under $4… (See how to sew diy pillow covers with a zipper.)

Free printable artwork can help adorn an open wall
I highly recommend using printable vintage art; last year, I used a vintage print similar to the one above our sofa.
